Commercialisim & The Creation of Hedonistic Society

Commercialism, mass media and mass consumption in a developed  industrial or high-income society/country creates a hedonistic society. Just like ancient Rome, when income rises, consumers choice becomes more selective, more self-indulgent, more personalized, specialised and differentiated from the masses. A hedonist consumer do their best to maximise their pleasure and forgo/eliminate pain. Hedonism from ethical perspective suggests that all people are entitled and ultimately, have the right to strive to attain the greatest level of pleasure possible. As such, marketers are aware of such segments of society in their demographic analysis, and strive to fulfil such wants and needs. This also raises ethical questions against modern marketing practices, by causing firms and marketers in participation in the process of corrupting moral standards, and forming a self-indulgent consumers with specific ways of thinking and consumption patterns.
